Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss the author's life and writing. David Treuer is an Ojibwe who grew up on the Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. He studied anthropology and has taught literature and creative writing. He has written novels, nonfiction, and for newspapers and other publications.

Class Discussion: What role do interviews plays in Treuer's writing? How does he allow his interviewees to edit his interpretation of what they tell him? Why does he do that? How does he combine memoir and history in his writing? How does he use his Indian heritage in his writing? How does his education and what he has read affect his writing? How does his exploration of the notion that Indian and non-Indian people live separate lives that never meet affect his writing? How does he write about the controversies and complexities of people's lives...
