Prologue
· The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Treuer, David. The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee. Riverhead Books, 2019. Hardcover.
· In the “Prologue,” David Treuer wrote that the book was telling the story of what happened in the 128 years since the 1890 massacre of at least 150 Lakota Sioux at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota.
· He said that he was writing about Indian life, not Indian death.
· He commented that it was surprising to many people that Indians “even have lives” (1).
· In 1890, the Lakota were trying to deal with a bad situation: the U.S. government was trying to solve the “Indian problem” by negotiation, starvation, and open warfare.
· When the Indians gained decisive victories, the government sat at the treaty table.
· In 1868, they gave the Lakota a large homeland in southwestern South Dakota and northern Nebraska.
