Lesson 1 (from Part I ("Playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" - "Enough!"))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze the elements of magical realism in the story Playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. In this story, Afghan-American teenager Mirwais plays a beloved video game and realizes he sees his own father and late uncle, Watak, as characters in the game. Mirwais's father was tortured and Watak was killed during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, and Mirwais's father is traumatized by those events and time period. Mirwais believes he can somehow save his father and Watak in the game - and possibly in real life.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is Mirwais, and what game does he like to play? What does Mirwais notice that is strange about the video game, and when does he notice it? Why does Mirwais think what he does in the game might affect what happens in real life...
