Objective
Students will analyze how an author brings together elements within the exposition stage of a plot arc to set up a complex world that will serve multiple functions as the narrative progresses.
Because the defining moment of The Hate U Give happens a mere 23 pages into the 444-page novel when Khalil is shot by the police officer, the condensed nature of the exposition stage provides an excellent opportunity for students to see how an author can allow the reader to get to know characters very well within a very short section of narrative. In a space of under 25 pages, the exposition stage of The Hate U Give's plot arc includes Starr's identity and her uncertainty about her place between two worlds, her complicated family relationships due to sharing a brother with her friend Kenya, Kenya's father King's role as the neighborhood gang leader, Starr's close childhood...
