Objective

Several customs of the Arabs are explained in Part 1, Chapters 1-5. The objective of this lesson is to fully understand the Arab customs.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: Why does Ibrahim's father give him the dagger? How does Ibrahim respond? What is the history of Ibrahim's people in the area? What is his tribe best known for? How do they relate to other tribes? Why does Ibrahim take a second wife? How does Hagar respond to being sent away? Why do very young Arab boys dress as girls? Who chooses the life paths for children? What important daily rituals do Ibrahim and his people do? What makes them different from the other people in the area?

2) Group work: In groups, students will select one of the following to analyze the Arab customs: power hierarchies, father-son relationships, role of women, or daily rituals. Groups must find information regarding their...
