Lesson 1 (from Part 1: Chapter 1-3)
Objective
In the beginning of the story the main character's real name isn't given for some time. The objective of this lesson is to look at the different ways to introduce characters in a story.
Lesson
1) Discussion: What reason did the author have in not giving the main character's name when the story first began, or in the first chapter?
2) Classwork: Have the students write out a different scenario in which the main character's name is revealed in a way other than him saying it to his recorder. This can be at any point in the story. Have the students explain how they think it changes the story.
3) Homework: Ask the students to pick a literary work in which there is a very unique, or memorable, introduction for the main character in the story. This is based on their personal opinion and can be any story, such...
