Essay Topic 1

As he was summing up what he'd heard Simon say, Og said to Simon: if we are not proud of what we are, how can we like ourselves?

1. Explain what you believe Og meant by this statement.

2. When you have failed at a goal, do you dislike yourself? Explain your answer with one or more examples.

3. Do you believe you can like yourself if you don't like what you do? Have you seen any evidence in your life of a person who wasn't proud of what she/he did but liked her/him self? Explain your answer using an example from the book.

Simon said that all people are capable of completing a great miracle. When Og asked what miracle, Simon had him first define the word miracle.

1. Do you agree with Og's definition of a miracle? How about Simon's? Do you think miracles do occur? Support both answers with why or why not.

2. Have you ever seen a miracle or have you ever wanted to see one? Explain the circumstances if you believe you've seen a miracle. If not, why would you want or not want to see a miracle?

3. Would seeing a miracle be frightening? Why or why not?

Og tells Simon of this book he read where the woman said the first thing she had to do to change was to say she needed help. AA says the same, that a person cannot get help or change until he/she acknowledges the need for change.

1. Why do you think this statement might be true? Use examples from the book to support your opinion.

2. Write about a time that you struggled to complete a task but needed help to do it. Did you ask for help? If not why and what was the ultimate outcome? If you asked for help how did that work for you?

3. If a friend of yours was struggling with a difficult problem but refused to ask for help, what would you say to convince her/him to do so? Use examples from the book to support your answer.
