In the opening chapters, Theroux spoke about the fascination he had with trains since childhood and stated, "I sought trains; I found passengers." In this lesson, students examine the ways in which Theroux created images of the people he met during his voyage, beginning with Duffill, a mysterious man on his way to Turkey.
Lesson
1. Class Discussion: How did Theroux first encounter Duffill? What were his first impressions of the man? Why did he find Duffill so mysterious? Was it his behavior or simply his appearance?
2. Partner Activity: Pair up with another student and discuss the various images Theroux used to create a picture of Duffill. What descriptions did Theroux use to convey the mysteriousness of the man? How did his clothes convey an image? His manner of speaking? His activities during the ride? Was Theroux reading too much into Duffill's appearance...
