Time line
Tape a length of butcher paper along one of the walls of the classroom, draw a line down the middle, and mark off each week of Theroux's journey. Have the students fill in the time line with the places Theroux traveled each week. Then, using magazines and pictures printed off the internet, have the students decorate the time line with photos of the specific places Theroux visited. Try to include famous landmarks as well as pictures of religious festivals and ethnic groups encountered during the trip.
Famous Train Lines
Using a world map, trace the paths of some of the famous railway routes taken by Theroux. You do not have to include each line, but be sure to include the Orient Express and the Trans-Siberian Express. Mark the entire length of each line, even if Theroux only traveled a portion of it.
