Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Part 2: Chapter 8)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book The Great Influenza by John M. Barry. Students will research the book’s author, read the Prologue through Chapter 2, and discuss the basic history of medical education in the United States and Europe. The Great Influenza looks at the 1918 flu pandemic through a number of different lenses: scientific, cultural, political, and personal. His opening chapters focus on the development of medical education in the U.S. and the formation of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the Prologue through Chapter 2 of the book. Following the reading, discuss with your group the information that has been related. What is the central subject of the book? Who is followed in the narratives of these first chapters?
