1. Group Discussion: The author uses a lot of description with the photo of Aldred's father. Why does the author use so much description? What does the reader learn about Aldred's father from the photo? What do we learn about Aldred from the photograph?

2. Small Group: Describe Aldred. Do a complete analysis about what the reader learns about him in the first chapter. Save this for comparison when the class finishes the book.

3. Pair Up: What characters are introduced in the first chapter? How do they relate to Aldred? Write a one-sentence...
