1. Describe the setting in which the narrator finds himself in at the beginning of the book.

The narrator finds himself in a busy queue by a long street. It is raining and in this city it appears to always be twilight, though nightfall never comes. The city is dingy and seemingly desolate.

2. How does the narrator move two spaces in line after he joins in waiting?

A woman who is standing in front of him in line snaps at the man she is standing with, exclaiming that she won't go on the bus at all. The man tells her that he doesn't care if she doesn't come along, that all he really wants is peace. They both walk away.

3. What happens to the Short Man in the line next to the narrator?

The Short Man in line tells the narrator that he was hoping to escape such people by boarding the bus, and he feels a bit discouraged to see such people waiting in line. Another passenger overhears this comment and hits the Short Man, who remains sprawled in the gutter.
