Objective

This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable by Amitav Ghosh. Students will research the book’s author, read the first two chapters, and discuss the narrative style and subject matter of the work. The Great Derangement is an examination of humankind’s failure to address the issues of climate change in literature, politics, and the arts. Amitav Ghosh opens his book with a focus on literature and an analysis of the problems with presenting climate change in the form of the modern novel.
