Objective
Students will meticulously analyze the many different elements of the cover art included with the narrative of The Great Believers in order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art that is chosen by Makkai to underscore these themes.
Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of The Great Believers provides an excellent opportunity to teach students skills in visual literacy. One edition of the novel uses intersecting lines and brilliant colors to draw the reader into its multifaceted and complex story. Within the Praise for the Novel section, a writer for the Chicago Review even calls The Great Believers, “a deft, harrowing novel that’s as beautiful as its cover.” Students will look critically at the cover of the book--its font, its imagery, its color...
