Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the setting of the Prologue to Chapter 3. The setting or settings in a novel can serve as a backdrop for the characters or almost take on the role of a character. The setting can also evoke feelings or set the tone in a book.

Class Discussion: Where does the story take place? How does the author present the setting? Does the author use photographic details or present details through suggestion? What does the setting indicate about the various characters, especially Alice? What feelings or attitudes does the setting evoke for the characters? Is the setting a neutral background, not important to the novel, or does the setting take on the role of a character? Explain.
