Lesson 1 (from "The Gift of the Magi")
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to introduce students to O. Henry’s 1905 short story, “The Gift of the Magi” and to research and discuss the author and the historical context of the story. “The Gift of the Magi” is a very short narrative but is rife with a number of literary devices which will be explored in-depth throughout this 15-day lesson plan. This gives students an opportunity to take a brief text and reexamine it through the lenses of symbolism, imagery, theme, setting, characters, and other literary devices. Historical context describes the political, cultural, and economic environment in which a story is related.
