Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 6))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the language and tone Lee employs throughout Part I of the novel. Henry "Monty" Montague is a wild, free-spirited upper class Britain at 18 years old, struggling to handle his father's disdain and the shame he has been taught he should feel for being attracted to other men. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter and the problems Henry is dealing with, Lee maintains a light-hearted tone and uses mostly informal, relatable language to pull the reader into Henry's world.
