When reading a book, it is important to have an understanding of the author's background to understand why the author had an interest in the subject presented. Chaim Potok was born in 1929 and was an American author and was a Rabbi who also wrote 18 books. Chaim Potok wrote "The Gates of November" in 1996. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the author of "The Gates of November," Chaim Potok and his choice of titles.

a) Biography: Students should find information on Chaim Potok, the author of "The Gates of November". Students should gather information on his family, childhood, education, and life as a writer and Rabbi.

b) Legacy: Students should find a list of all of Potok's published works and write a 2-3 sentence summary of each book.
