· Following a dedication and epigraph, the novel begins in I, 1, with Cee relating the context of her brother’s death by drowning.
· Details of setting are presented, as are details of the lives of the Williams family.
· Cee relates her playing with her brother, glossing childhood games, and Wayne splashes into the water.
· A new section takes on an epistolary tone as Cee describes the events of Wayne’s drowning.
· Another section details Cee’s attempt to save her brother from drowning.
· Cee wakes to find herself disoriented on the beach, recovering from her exertions in confusion and without her brother.
· At length, amid Cee losing and regaining consciousness, she is found by another beachgoer and taken up.
· Cee finds herself transported home...
