Objective
Setting. The setting or location of any novel is often as important as the characters. It is the early 1800s and England has just started a war with the United States.
The objective of this lesson is to look at setting.
Lesson
1. Homework. Students will research Europe and the United States around the early 1800's, writing a paper on some finding in the research that interests the students and which is relevant to The Fortune of War.
2. Class discussion. Could this novel had been set anywhere? How do the settings make this a unique story? How does the settings differ from the where this class lives? How do the settings affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?
3. Group work. In groups students will research a setting in the world at present, where the setting might be similar and discuss the ways...
