Objective
Students will research the sociological problem of police brutality levied against people of color throughout American history and will apply this learning to their understanding of the collection The Fire This Time and its themes.
In nearly every essay within the collection The Fire This Time, there is a mention or deep discussion about the topic of police brutality levied against the African-American community throughout America's history. Whether it is Emily Roboteau's discussion of the different ways in which white mothers and black mothers give advice to their kids as they leave the house or Edwidge Danticat's essay "Message to My Daughters" in which Danicat struggles to identify the right time to tell her daughters that their family friend Abner Louima was sexually assaulted so violently at the hands of police that he had to endure several surgeries to repair his organs, the collection revolves around...
