Lesson 1 (from Preface and Chapter I)

Objective

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the political situation in Spain.

Lesson

1. Ask the students to research and write a history time line for Spain up to 1860. What influence did Spain have in Europe? What problems lead up to the Glorious Revolution.

2. In groups of three ask the students to go through the book and find words that relate to real historical figures or events. Ask each group to choose one of these events or figures and develop a five minute presentation on their influence on the historical events in the book.

3. Divide the students into pairs and ask them to develop a book list of Spanish writers during the 1860s. The students should then each pick a book and write 500 words about the book and what it says about Spanish society at that time.
