Hazel says depression is one of the side effects listed in the cancer pamphlets that she reads. Hazels says, however, that she considers depression to be a side effect of dying rather than the cancer itself.

Because Hazel’s thyroid cancer has spread into her lungs, Hazel began developing fluid in her lungs and therefore has an oxygen tank which she wheels around with her all the time. Hazel also uses a different oxygen machine that she has named “Philip” when she sleeps.

3. What does Augustus reveal about himself at the cancer support group meeting in Chapter 1?

The new boy introduces himself as Augustus Waters. He says that he had a touch of cancer before but that he's here today because Isaac asked him to attend. Augustus doesn't speak again until Patrick, the group leader, asks about his fears. Augustus says he fears oblivion.
