In The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons, Powell spent a considerable amount of time, the first four chapters, describing the scenery, topography and geological conditions of the Valley of the Colorado River Valley. In this lesson, students will explore and analyze the elements that make up the location of the book.
Lesson
1- Preview: Look over the pictures in Chapter I. How would you describe the landscape of the Colorado River Valley? List at least five geologic features that you can see in the illustrations. Share responses as time permits.
2- Research: Go to the school's computer lab to research the Colorado River. In partners, have students research the Colorado River. Have students find the following: map, pictures, and descriptions.
