Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 70))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Evangeline's relationship with Cecil Whitstone. Evangeline, a fairly innocent and naive girl from the country, is charmed by Cecil when she comes to London for the first time to work as a governess to his half-siblings. But when Cecil seduces Evangeline and she becomes pregnant out of wedlock, this chain of events sets in motion a disastrous set of consequences for Evangeline that changes her life forever.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Where is Evangeline from originally? What brings Evangeline to London? How does Evangeline meet Cecil Whitstone? What does Evangeline think of Cecil at first? When Evangeline gets in trouble and Cecil is traveling, what does she think will happen when Cecil returns? By the time Evangeline is getting on the old slave ship at the end of Part I, what does Evangeline think of Cecil?
