Lesson 1 (from Part I (Prologue - Chapter 6))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Sterling's use of dramatic irony in the Prologue. In the Prologue, the main character, Vivi, is inconsolable and heartbroken over her breakup with her short-term boyfriend, Rhys. Vivi, a 19-year-old witch, is so upset that she and her cousin Gwyn cast a curse on Rhys as a joke, never thinking the curse will take or have any power. But by the end of the Prologue, Sterling has employed dramatic irony in letting the reader know the curse or hex actually did take, unbeknownst to Vivi and Gwyn.
