Lesson 1 (from January - February)

Objective

In this lesson, students will analyze the introduction to the novel and predict why the author chose to begin the novel in this manner.

The novel starts off with a young, male reveler during the New Year celebrations. He is on the banks of a marshy river and has every intention of taking a swim until he is overcome by irrational fear. He shakes it off and the reader is left to wonder about the cause of his fear and if he did, indeed, end up going for a swim.

Lesson

Group Discussion: As a class, discuss the introduction. Why did the author choose to start the story in this manner? What does this have to do with the story line? Did the man go swimming? Was the man killed? Did he actually see a monster, or just have the feeling there was a monster present...
