Objective
Setting: The setting is a major part of "The Ersatz Elevator." The objective of this lesson is to study the setting and its influence on the story.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion - Setting is more than just the where, but also the when. What is the setting? How does the setting affect the story? The characters? How does the setting set up the major conflict in the story? What is the meaning of the word "dark"?
2) Small Group Activity - Divide the class into groups of three or four students. Each group should distribute duties of recorder, reporter, writer, and timekeeper. Be sure to define the roles and their corresponding responsibilities. Explore the setting of Dark Avenue and compare its characteristics to its descriptions. Compare the descriptions to the absurdity of the setting. A reporter will convey the group's findings to the class.
