Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to compare and contrast the characters of Danny Conroy, the narrator, and his sister Maeve. Maeve is about seven years older than Danny, and because the siblings' mother has left the family and their father is distant and mysterious, Maeve has always acted as Danny's protector. Maeve and Danny are both deeply wounded by their father's indifference and their mother's absence, and their stepmother, Andrea, is also a cold presence. Both as children and adults, Maeve and Danny demonstrate different capacities for love, forgiveness, and resilience.
