In this lesson, the students will research the history and background of the author.
Jane Harper was born in the United Kingdom. She has lived, studied, and held jobs around Europe and now lives and works in Australia. The students will make connections between her previous experiences and this novel.

Class Discussion: Jane Harper’s, The Dry, was her first novel and an international bestseller. Would it be difficult to repeat an initial success like that? Do you think nonfiction writers invent their source material or use their lives as inspiration? How may Harper’s career as a reporter influence her work?
Individual Activity: What conclusions can be drawn between the author’s biography on the jacket cover and what you now know about this story? Where did Harper grow up? Why do you think she was drawn back to Australia?
