Prisoners were brought to the camps in trains. Upon arrival they were either killed right away or became slave labor--a slower route to death because of the lack of food.
2. What did the Nazis hope as the tide of war turned in 1942?
The Nazis hope that the idea and scope of the death camps would be so horrific that people would not believe it is true. Once it became clear that they were losing the war, they tried to get rid of all traces of the atrocities they committed.
3. What is "willed ignorance?"
The Germans suffer "willed ignorance" after the war. They pretend that they had no idea of the atrocities that their government was inflicting on the Jews and other prisoners. It is easier to pretend that it didn't happen than to confront it.
