1. Students will take notes from teacher lecture on THE DECAMERON. Included should be (1) the style of the work, (2) sources for the various tales in the
work; (3) impact of THE DECAMERON on later works such as Chaucer's THE CANTERBURY TALES.
2. For discussion: the historical setting in the mid 14th Century when the Black Plague was devastating Europe. Discuss the impact of the plague as seen
in the book that caused people to adopt a philosophy of "living for the moment."
3. From teacher selected passages in the tale of Ser Ciappelletto, discuss the prevailing attitude toward religion and the church in the 14th Century.
