The narrator knows something is wrong in the hospital due to a number of factors. First, the nurses are late to feed him and bathe him, and his nurses are never late. Also, the sounds of outside traffic are nonexistent, and he knows there should be some sounds. Finally, he hears strange sounds coming from outside of his room.

2. Describe the events of the night of May 7th, in terms of what the narrator notes is said to have occurred, according to history books.

The narrator says there were bright green lights appearing in the skies over California on May 6th. Soon, a story developed that the Earth was passing through a cloud of comet debris. Radio announcers urged everyone to go outside and see the sight, and nearly everyone did.
