· In Chapter I, the narrator states how unusual it is for a baby to be born in a hospital in 1860, as most are born at home.
· Mr. and Mrs. Roger Button are “fifty years ahead of style” when they decide to have their baby in a hospital (1).
· The Buttons were well off and well connected to the other leading families in ante-bellum Baltimore, Maryland.
· Since this baby was the Buttons’ first, Mr. Button was nervous, as would any first-time father be.
