Lesson 1 (from Prologue - Chapter 3)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Holly Black’s contemporary young adult fantasy novel, The Cruel Prince. Students will read the Prologue and Chapter 1, identify and discuss the narrative style of the novel, and examine the exposition established in these first chapters. The Cruel Prince opens its Prologue with important back-story as to how Jude, her twin sister Taryn, and their elder sister Vivi ended up in the world of Faerie. In the first chapter, the narrative jumps forward ten years to introduce its main narrator and protagonist, Jade Duarte.
