Lesson 1 (from Chapter One: The Big Silver - Chapter Three: Nets)
Objective
Students will look at the metaphor of "the Big Silver" in the first chapter of the autobiography. They will discuss how this metaphor applies to relations between women and men, and later, in Chapter Two, how Levy applies this metaphor to her life and divorce.
Lesson
Individual Activity: What is the origin of "Big Silver" in Chapter One? How does it apply to the couple Levy overhears? Write a one-paragraph summary.
Class Activity: How does Levy construct the idea of "Big Silver" to a representation of the relationship between men and women? Look on page 4 to where Levy writes "She had to make a bid for a self that possessed freedoms the Big Silver took for granted" (4). How does this idea of freedom or lack of connect to the metaphor?
