The basis of this book is Sufism. Therefore, it is very important that students understand what Sufism is. The objective of this lesson is to examine Sufism for the purpose of understanding the reasoning behind the book.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: Pass out various examples of writings regarding Sufism (use writings that are spoken about in the introduction to keep to the lesson tied to the text) . Have students discuss the similarities and try to decide what Sufism is. Pose the following questions to the class: What is Sufism?; What are the commonalities of the writings?; What are the major themes of Sufism?; Why is Sufism important to Persians?
2) Small Group Research/Presentation: Place students in groups of 2-3. Once in groups, tell students to research different aspects of Sufism. Give each group one of the following and have them...
