Objective
Part 1 Chapter 1
The people aboard the Medea discuss various aspects of Haiti that they expect to find there. One person expects the rule of the Tonton Macoutes, another the progressive mind of the Secretary for Social Welfare, and another a hotel vacant of tourists. This lesson will examine the various historical aspects of Haiti that are presented to the reader before the characters even disembark. The lesson will also examine Brown as a literary character and his perception of Haiti.
Lesson
1. Finding Examples. Have the students work individually to find all the examples in Chapter One of the facets of Haiti. How many are negative? How many are positive? Have them share their answers in small groups.
2. Individual Writing. Have students to write about the aspects of Brown's character which are present in this chapter. Is he humorous, hopeless, sarcastic, cynical, jaded, bored, or something else...
