Lesson 1 (from "Diagnosis" - "Toward a Pathology of the Possessed")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book The Collected Schizophrenias by Esmé Weijun Wang. Students will identify and discuss the book’s genre, structure, and narrative style. The Collected Schizophrenias is comprised of 13 autobiographical essays written from the first-person perspective of author Wang. These essays detail both factual information regarding schizophrenia as well as the author’s commentary on her own experiences with diagnosis and treatment.

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author Esmé Weijun Wang and the publication and critical reception of The Collected Schizophrenias. What was Wang’s debut novel and how was it received critically? What awards has the author earned?
