Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Walter's descriptions of police treatment of itinerants, working men, and the poor. In Part I, Rye and Gig are among throngs of men who are sleeping rough on the ballfield when dozens of police officers arrive on the scene and begin brutally beating them. Rye and Gig later find out one of the reasons for this injustice is because a police officer was killed the night before, and the acting Police Chief, John Sullivan, is looking for revenge for his man's death. But even aside from the killing, the Spokane police are known for their brutality and inhumane treatment of the poor in the city - especially those who have the nerve to organize for better treatment for workers.
