Birth

This novel is about the beginning of a city. The readers also hear about how other cities began, and in some ways each of the boroughs in the novel are each beginning as well.

Tendrils

To some extent, this ick or ooze is the embodiment of the Enemy. It is slowly growing over the city, though the avatars try to fight it. Sometimes it can almost seem to come to life. At other times it seems to actually inhabit human beings and direct their behaviors.

The Color White

The tendrils are could be described this way, but so, too, could the Enemy’s major representative. This symbol obviously has a number of racial overtones in the book as well. For example, Staten Island is racially different from the other avatars.
