Lesson 1 (from Prologue, Interruption)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the Prologue and first “Interruption” of the novel and consider how the author sets up the work’s tone. Tone in this case means her attitude towards her subject matter and the attitude she wants the reader to adopt towards it.
This lesson helps introduce students to the book through close reading of the opening pages. Students will likely be confused as to what happens in these pages, but should focus on elements like word choice, syntax, imagery, and point-or-view to make determinations about tone.

Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask each group to create a list of specific instances in the Prologue where the speaker’s personality comes across and to draw some conclusions about that personality. They should be prepared to share their findings with the class.
