They put the instructions in a box with instructions for each mayor to pass it down to the next. The box has a timed lock on it so that it will open at the appropriate time.

2. What is Assignment Day and how are assignments given?

Assignment Day is the day each twelve-year-old is assigned a job in Ember. The jobs are written on scraps of paper and put into a bag. Each student draws a job assignment at random.

3. List at least three of the jobs that are included in the list of jobs given out to Lina, Doon, and their classmates. Briefly described those jobs.

One of the jobs is messenger and that person carries messages from one person to another throughout the city. Another job is supply depot clerk and that person helps keep track of the supplies still available for the citizens of Ember. Another is electrician's helper and that person learns to work on the generator that provides electricity for the city.
