Chapter 1
• The novel begins with the narrator, David, explaining that when he was young he would dream of a great city.
• David’s eldest sister, Mary, told him that such a place no longer existed and that he was dreaming of the past, “the wonderful world that the Old People had lived in; as it had been before God sent Tribulation” (5).
• One day, while playing alone, David met Sophie, a girl who did not live in his community.
• When Sophie’s foot got stuck in a rock, David tried to help free her, even though Sophie did not want his help.
• In the process of helping her, David saw she had an extra toe on her foot.
