Objective

Students will explore the definition and purposes of metafiction.

"The Center of the Story," a short story about the act of writing stories, operates as metafiction. Without at least a passing familiarity with the definition of and purposes of metafiction, it is difficult to make much meaning from Davis's story. This lesson familiarizes students with the definition and purposes of metafiction so that they are better prepared to read and extract meaning from "The Center of the Story."

Lesson

Viewing Activity: Show students Rowan Ellis's "Metafiction Explained (Deadpool, Supernatural, Scream & more)" (available online). As they watch, ask students to write a summary of this video's key ideas.

Reading Activity: Distribute copies of Emory University's blog entry "Metafiction" (available online). Ask students to read and annotate this article.
