The Cement Garden is a tale of children dysfunctionally acting as adults when both parents die. They struggle with their own behavior issues and incest as well as how to conceal their mother's death from the authorities. The writer of this book is Ian McEwan. McEwan has several novels to his credit and has an interesting story of his own life. Today, students will open their study of The Cement Garden by first learning about the author, Ian McEwan.

Lesson

1) Small group activity: Break the class into groups of three or four, creating enough groups to research these topics: the author's family life, the author's educational background, the author's work history, the author's writing successes. Each group prepares its information to present to the class for discussion. Each group should make a handout for their classmates from the information they compile.
