Objective
The objective of this lesson is to teach students how to analyze elements of a novel that do not contain story. The cover art, the epigraph, and the dedication all contain important contextualizing clues. The epigraph is especially poignant, it makes an intertextual reference to Joanne Harris’ Chocolat. Often students skip over the non-literary parts of a novel; however, it is important to teach students how to analyze all elements of a novel.
