• An elderly couple, Axl and Beatrice live in a settlement on the edge of a bog.

• Their village is an underground warren dug deep into the hillside.

• It is connected to other dwelling places by underground passages and covered corridors.

• Their home is cold, because their home is not near the central fire.

• They cannot even have a candle.

• The village council ruled that they could not have a candle for fear they might knock it over.

• So once night comes, they have to sit in the dark or go to bed.

• One spring morning, Axl rises before his wife.

• He goes outside to think, and he decides...
