In the Foreword to "The Broken Cord" Louise Erdrich describe the more challenging aspects of fetal alcohol syndrome. At one point she detailed what she termed the "most damaging" aspect of FAS - the inability to make cause and effect connections. In other words, the inability to "think ahead." Louise considered this a problem among those suffering from FAS not just as children, but also especially among women suffering from FAS.
