Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-3)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss why Father referred to a girl named Malali, and what is the significance of her story. Father tells the story a young girl who encourages Afghan soldiers to not give up when they are fighting the British in 1880. He also uses the name when he speaks to Parvana when he is dragged away from his family by soldiers.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What does Parvana's father tell her as the soldiers drag him off? Why does he call her Malali? What does he tell her to do? What do his words mean to Parvana? How do his words give her courage when she is outside the prison with her mother? What is the significance of Malali's story for Parvana?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss what Father says is the lesson behind the story...
